Don’t Be Fooled! The Lies and Truth About Marriage – Part 2

For your personal time of study or for use in discussion with others.

My thoughts:

  • In Mark 10:1-12, Jesus says a lot about marriage. Just by looking at and listening to things around me, I realize that what Jesus values isn’t what is always valued today. To me, some ways this is seen most is ________________ .
  • Jesus teaches that marriage is for a lifetime. What are my views of marriage and divorce shaped by? When there isn’t adultery but another marriage covenant-breaking action such as physical abuse or substance abuse, how do I see those situations tying into Jesus’ teaching?
  • The place for a sexual relationship is within marriage. It’s one reason why Jesus brings up ‘one flesh’ and adultery. Sex, when it is misused and misplaced, can cause any number of difficulties. The ones that come to mind for me are ________________ .
  • What has been my response to the lies society tells me about marriage?

My words and actions:

Married person: When I think about the marriages of others, I realize there are good ones and struggling ones. I also know where mine falls on that spectrum. I want God’s truth to be revealed in my relationship, especially in the one closest to me. More than words, I know my heart must wrestle with those truths first.

Single person: I either think about marriage a lot or I don’t think about it at all. I realize it is something from God and, therefore, reflects him. I want God’s truth to be revealed in how I speak of marriage to others. More than words, I know my heart must wrestle with those truths first.

My prayer;

Jesus, no matter what you teach, some aspects are easier for me to follow than others. And that often depends on the day or the event. In my own relational status, I want to be a conduit for your truth in a world saturated with lies. Please help me to represent you well, deeply, and wholeheartedly. As others have helped me, I want to help others. Your name is powerful, so I speak using it, Amen.
