1, 2, 3 John: Something Worth Writing About

For your personal time of study or for use in discussion with others.

My thoughts:

  • How does 1 John 4:7-16 describe God’s love for me? What characteristics of God’s love are highlighted?
  • In what ways does God’s love, demonstrated through Jesus, impact my understanding of what love is?
  • What dangers or pitfalls does 2 John warn me against regarding what I’m taught and what I teach?
  • How can I balance showing love and standing firm in the truth of God’s Word?
  • Reflecting on 3 John, what can I learn about hospitality and supporting fellow believers?
  • How can I practically avoid putting myself before others?

My words and actions:

Loving others well is an option, but aware of the cross, loving others well is not an option. Despite the many ways I’ve let God down, he sticks with me. He calls on me to stick with others – those in my church family and those outside it. As I leave a conversation, whether in person or not, I would do well to ask, “Do they know I love them?”

My prayer;

Loving others is not always easy for me, Jesus. I know you loved me enough to die for me, but I let so many things stand between me and those I know. My relationships with people do not always show them I understand how much you did for me. Please bring to mind all you did and all you have for me to do. Thank you for the power of your life and your name. Amen.
