Not Outdated, Just First: Actions

For your personal time of study or for use in discussion with others.

My thoughts:

  • James writes that my actions are not insignificant (James 1:19-21). The very words of God are to be the seed from which they grow. My earliest memories of learning what the Bible says are ______________ . I most recently read from those words ______________ . As for the “moral filth” that James writes of, I look back on yesterday and these actions are what James surely had in mind: ______________ .
  • Jude’s short letter also addresses the actions of a person. He lists several people in Israel’s earliest history who chose wrong over right (5-11). My family and friends have given me similar names. Some repeatedly made wrong choices, while others made a single weighty decision and acted on it. I’ve told myself I won’t do those things, but I fall prey to such results. If Jude knew me, he could tell about the time I ______________ or the most recent time when I ______________ .

My words and actions:

I can justify anything I do. I’ve told myself why something must be done or shouldn’t be acted upon. With that sense of justification, I act. But without an accurate gauge of right or wrong, I’m soon driving down the highway of life but in the wrong lane. God’s words fill the pages of the front part of the Bible, and Jesus’ words fill the back. Those words plant truth inside me – truth meant to influence every action I make. No action is tiny or without impact. No life is tiny or without impact – including mine.

My prayer;

Lord, you’ve spoken, and I’ve heard. I may not have heard as much as others, but I know I’ve heard more than some. Your words speak to my actions. I desperately want to be “quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” but I do not always choose to act that way. I need your help moving from what my head knows to what my hands and mouth do. I will return to your words with your help and your reminders. Please help that seed in me keep growing so that the fruit you want is the only fruit that is seen. I ask in the name of Jesus, Amen.
