myTunes: Singing and Praying the Psalms

For your personal time of study or for use in discussion with others.

My prayer;

God, I don’t always know what to say to you. I’m so excited or thankful for what you’ve done in some situations, but other times, I’m scared or even angry. Please hear my words as I say your words back to you. As I sing or pray the psalms, I ask you to listen to what I say as if I’d written those words myself. Thank you for giving me a vocabulary when my own words aren’t always there.

My thoughts:

  • Psalm 3 describes a situation I can relate to: when people around me don’t like me. I will say these words to God as my prayer (read or make up a tune and sing Psalm 3). The people that are against me right now are ______________ . This psalm reminds me that God ______________ .
  • Psalm 47 makes me smile. It is such a reminder of how big and how good God is. God, hear these words from me (read or make up a tune and sing Psalm 47). I needed to be reminded that God is even more powerful than ______________ .

My words and actions:

All the psalms can capture sentiments about what it is like to live life in this place. As I wonder about what I should say to God or about God, all the lyrics in the book of Psalms give words to frame those conversations. I want my mind to pick from such words, phrases, and examples. In turn, I want my own words and actions to reflect that I believe my God is real, powerful, and fully displayed in Jesus.
