His Own Two Hands

“With My Own Two Hands” is a song by Ben Harper released in 2002, which was made more popular by its inclusion on the 2006 Curious George movie soundtrack. With lyrics such as, “I can change the world, with my own two hands, make a better place, with my own two hands,” Ben Harper’s focus is on how changes in the world can take place when one single person decides to take action. The song goes on to talk about making the world a kinder, brighter and safer place for the human race. The theme is simple, yet dynamic.

There is one particular verse that sticks out each time I hear this song that, for me, changes the focus away from a human aspect…

“Now I can hold you, in my own two hands

And I can comfort you, with my own two hands

But you got to use, use your own two hands”

It’s at this point in the song where I can see these lyrics as a reminder from God that he is capable on His own to make the world a better, kinder, brighter and safer place. And when the world does not feel like this, He is there to hold us and comfort us. But the last line in the verse is His charge to us as His children…”But you got to use…your own two hands.”

1 Peter 4:10 says, “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.”

This is just one verse of many where we are challenged as children of God to serve one another, where we are charged with the responsibility of making this world a better place. Yes, we have an amazing God and nothing is impossible for Him. But God made us in His image, with His own two hands, so that we can change the world with our own two hands.
